Doctors treating people with serious mental illness in the UK should take responsibility for putting “dangerous” people on our streets, according to the father of Grace O’Malley-Kumar, who was stabbed last year the past.

“Change is needed. We have to step back a little bit and see what is safe for the public.

“We lost the absolute love of our lives, our lovely, beautiful and brave daughter, Gracie, and at the end of the day what we want to see is a safe community.

“I think the public is crying out for safety from these crimes.

“At the end of the day, we want to fix the Mental Health Act – it’s not about taking away people’s freedom.

“It is about taking responsibility for the nurses who put such people on our streets, any psychiatrist who puts a dangerous person on our streets must be responsible for discharging that patient if they have not done a proper evaluation full of harm … done under the law when the Mental Health Act is fully amended and completed.”

Dr Kumar told Sky News: “We would like the terms of use to include more limitations, because there have been a lot of mistakes.

“Everyone who has suffered today in England, who has suffered the way we have, we want justice for them, we want the law to change for them, we are fighting on their behalf.

We really want to change things for the better, so that no other family is afraid that their child can ride the school bus, go to school, go to college and be away from their families. you.”

It comes after the final phase of a special CQC review into Calocane’s care by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) found the risk ratings “reduced or omitted” key elements of the serious risk he was put it on others.

Dr Kumar said the report was “horrendous” to read.

“We had a simple case of a guilty person who was not taking his medication. All this is painful to read.

“There were many opportunities to change Calocane’s path, but none of those opportunities were taken by any of the doctors.

Health chiefs in England have ordered NHS agencies to review how they care for patients with serious mental illnesses.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “For the individuals involved, their families and loved ones, the damage is irreparable.

“However there is action that can and should be taken to support people with serious mental health needs and provide better protection for the public now and in the future.”

Calocane was given an indefinite hospital order in January after admitting to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.
